Organic vs. Conventional

This weekend I braved the crowds of downtown Denver to see the Nuggets mark another victory. As we were walking in the doors, a woman was frantically trying to find a lighter for her cigarette. She questioned nearly everyone walking by, “Do you smoke, do you have a lighter?” With no responses, she threw her arms up and helplessly stated, “I mean does nobody smoke anymore, don’t you know they’re organic!” My mom and I couldn’t help but chuckle and even the woman was laughing at her joke. I could just see the next marketing efforts of the tobacco industry to read: “Organically Grown Tobacco in every cigarette.” Hah!

However, her comment did prompt me to start thinking about the true definition of “organic” when it pertains to food. If you were to look in my pantry and freezer there are dozens of items that claim to be organic. I buy these products because in the back of my mind I think that in some way the food is healthier or produced in a way that would make me cringe less. But I never really knew exactly what the term meant until now. Thank you Amy, for another excellent and enlightening article!
