Every September, National Recovery Month serves as a reminder that recovery is possible, hope is powerful, and support can make a life-changing difference. First established in 1989, Recovery Month celebrates the millions of people who are in recovery from substance use and mental health challenges while recognizing the family members, providers, peers, and communities who help make recovery possible.

Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. It can look different for every individual, with paths that may include counseling, treatment, peer support, community resources, healthy relationships, and workplace support. While each person’s experience is unique, recovery is built on a common foundation: connection, resilience, and access to resources that help people move forward.

Why Recovery-Friendly Workplaces Matter

Because adults spend much of their lives at work, workplaces can play an important role in supporting recovery. A supportive culture helps reduce stigma, encourages employees to seek help earlier, and creates an environment where people feel comfortable accessing resources.

Recovery-friendly workplaces recognize employees as whole people with lives beyond work. By promoting wellbeing, offering support, and encouraging open conversations, organizations can help employees stay healthy, engaged, and productive. Employee Assistance Programs can also play an important role in recovery by providing confidential access to counseling, support, and community resources.

Small Actions Can Make a Big Difference

National Recovery Month is an opportunity for all of us to consider how we can support recovery in our communities and workplaces. Some simple ways to participate include:

  • Learning more about substance use disorders and recovery.
  • Challenging stigma when you hear misinformation or stereotypes.
  • Sharing recovery resources with colleagues, friends, or family members.
  • Encouraging open conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
  • Supporting recovery-friendly policies and workplace practices.
  • Connecting individuals with professional support when needed.

Resources That Support Recovery

Colorado Recovery Friendly Workplace

Supporting recovery starts with connecting people to resources and creating environments where they feel safe seeking help. One way that organizations are doing this is through the Colorado Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative.

MINES & Associates is proud to participate in the Colorado Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative, which helps organizations create supportive, stigma-free environments and connect employees and their families with prevention, treatment, and recovery resources.

This commitment aligns with our mission to support health, safety, and wellbeing by fostering understanding, reducing stigma, and ensuring recovery is met with respect and meaningful support in the workplace.

Upcoming Event Spotlight: Leadership Social

One example of recovery-friendly leadership in action is the annual Leadership Social hosted by Recovery Friendly Workplace.

Many organizations proudly host social gatherings and networking events, but traditional social events do not always feel inclusive for individuals in recovery.

Recovery Friendly Workplace is committed to creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, including those in recovery. Their signature fundraiser, the Leadership Social, demonstrates what a fun, engaging, and recovery-friendly social event can look like while bringing together leaders who are committed to supporting recovery in their workplaces and communities.

MINES & Associates is proud to sponsor this year’s Leadership Social because we believe in supporting employees from every angle. We invite community members, employers, leaders, and advocates to attend and experience recovery-friendly leadership in action.
