January is Self-Love Month — a time to think about the relationship you have with yourself and start the year with kindness and care for yourself. A lot of us kick off the year with big resolutions about work, fitness, or family, but how often do we actually focus on loving ourselves?

Self-love isn’t just bubble baths and affirmations (though those can be nice!). It’s about treating yourself with respect, compassion, and understanding. It’s recognizing that you matter and that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s essential to your overall well-being.

To help you start this Self-Love Month off right, here are five ways to practice self-love and set the tone for the new year.

1. Do some reflection

It’s so easy to go through life on autopilot, but self-love starts with being present with yourself. You can’t meet your needs if you don’t stop to notice what they are.

Try to take a little time this month to check in with yourself. How are you really feeling as you start the new year? What’s been weighing on you? What’s been bringing you joy? Are there areas in your life where you’ve been too hard on yourself?

Journaling can also be a great way to get in touch with your thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t take up hours of your time — even answering a few simple questions can help. If you’re stuck, start with prompts like:

  • What do I need more of in my life right now?
  • What’s something I want to let go of this year?
  • How can I show myself kindness today?
  • In what ways can I show my body gratitude?

Just taking the time to reflect can be an act of self-love in and of itself. You can make this reflection a habit moving forward into the rest of the year.

2. Look for meaning and connection at work

We spend a lot of time at work, so finding ways to make it a source of connection and meaning is an important part of self-love. That doesn’t mean you have to love every part of your job — most people don’t! But it’s worth thinking about what makes you feel fulfilled or connected during your workday.

Ask yourself:

  • What parts of my work bring me the most joy or purpose?
  • In what ways does my current job help me align with my values?
  • How can I build stronger connections with coworkers?
  • Are there boundaries I can set to protect my energy?

If your work feels a little empty right now, that’s okay. You don’t have to have your dream job for it to be meaningful. Focus on the little things, and start small. Build connections day by day. Think about how your job could help you gain access to other things you love in your life, like travel.

And if your current work situation really isn’t serving you, self-love might mean taking steps to make a change. It could be exploring opportunities that better align with your values or setting professional goals that feel more meaningful.

3. Be as kind to yourself as you are to others

So many of us are way harder on ourselves than we are on anyone else. The way we talk to ourselves is often harsher than anything we’d say to a friend. For example, you might quickly forgive a friend for a simple accident, but beat yourself up about one for days or even months or years.

One of the most powerful ways to practice self-love is to change that — to change the way you treat and talk to yourself.

The next time you catch yourself being overly critical, take a few breaths to pause. Reflect, and ask yourself: “Would I say this to someone I care about?” If the answer is no, try to reframe the thought into something kinder. For example:

  • Instead of “I can’t believe I messed that up,” try “Mistakes happen. I’ll learn from this and move on.”
  • Instead of “I’m so far behind everyone else,” try “I’m on my own path, and that’s okay.”

Being kind to yourself doesn’t mean that you think you’re perfect or you’re ignoring areas where you want to improve. It just means giving yourself the same compassion you’d offer to someone else. At the end of the day, we’re all only human.

4. Make time for rest and joy

In a world that glorifies busyness, taking time just to rest can sometimes feel like slacking off. But the truth is that rest is essential — and it’s one of the most loving things you can give yourself.

Rest doesn’t necessarily need to mean taking a nap every day, although getting restful sleep each night is essential for your physical and mental health. Reflect on what would help you feel more rested. What does rest look like for you? Maybe it’s an extra hour of sleep, a quiet morning with your favorite book, or a few minutes outside in the fresh air. Whatever it is, make space for it without guilt.

Self-love also means making time for joy. What lights you up? Whether it’s a hobby you love, a favorite TV show, or spending time with someone who makes you laugh, prioritize the things that make you feel alive. These moments are what make life meaningful.

5. Take advantage of accessible mental health resources

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and prioritizing it is a huge act of self-love. If you’ve been struggling with stress, anxiety, or just feeling off, you don’t have to go through it alone. There are many resources out there that can help.

Many workplaces offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that include free, confidential counseling and mental health resources. You can get access to a qualified counselor who can support you through everything from work stress to personal challenges. Especially if you feel like therapy is out-of-budget for you right now, using your EAP can be a great way to get support without worrying about the cost.

There are also community resources and online tools that provide free or low-cost mental health support, like hotlines, local support groups, and apps. Mental health support isn’t just for people who live with a mental health condition — it can be a good way for anyone to show themselves some love.

Self-love isn’t about being perfect, and it’s not something you do once and forget about. It’s a practice — something you build little by little. By taking time to check in with yourself, prioritizing your mental health, finding meaning in your work, being kind to yourself, and making space for rest and joy, you can start the year feeling grounded and cared for.

This Self-Love Month, please remember: Every step you take toward self-love is a step toward a happier, healthier you. We’re rooting for you!
