Deciding on the right therapy is a bit like buying a car. There are many factors to consider; how fast do you need to go, are you driving the car over tough terrain or are you driving down easy roads, is there more than one person riding in the car, etc. You get the drift. I would never buy a Corvette if I went to Pikes Peak every weekend or a minivan if I was single. Similarly, I wouldn’t seek out psychodynamic therapy if I wanted to see a therapist for career decisions. Therapy is a time for personal growth and healing; it is not a one size fits all entity.
I have talked to quite a few people who think that therapy is just about rehashing your past or childhood. And it’s true that some therapeutic approaches find your past behaviors and experiences to be important in the therapeutic process, but not all of them do. This is important to discuss because many of us fear the unknown and many people avoid getting help because they aren’t sure what to expect.
